Not Another Statistic

When I was in the sixth grade, I was told by a teacher that I would become another statistic of our neighborhood, which meant getting pregnant and never going to college. From then on I worked hard, maintaining honor roll grades. I even skipped my senior year of high school to go to college a year early, thanks to a college access initiative by the State of Ohio. Although I had ambition, I had the desire of any teenage girl: love.

“I am a woman who knows myself and what I can handle, and no one should be able to take away that right to choose what is best for me and my future.”

I met a guy a few years older than me at a party. We would hang out and began to get to know each other. We talked about our dreams and the future. When I became pregnant, all those discussions faded away.

I knew I had to make a choice and the choice needed to come fast. When my mother found out I was pregnant, she told me I could forget about finishing college in Atlanta, which was my dream.

It was all too much for me. The guy I had fallen for often changed his mind. One day, he would want me to keep the pregnancy, the next day he thought his future in baseball was more important than starting a family.

I decided that waiting for the right decision was not enough. I had to do what was best for me—not my mother or boyfriend. I bravely went through the process and have since graduated summa cum laude from a university, started a business, and am in the process of finishing my master’s degree in marketing and communications.

I am now married to a wonderful man, who knows my story and respects my right to have a child when we are both ready. Having an abortion is one of the toughest decisions a woman may face; however, it is a decision that should not be left in the hands of others. I am a woman who knows myself and what I can handle, and no one should be able to take away that right to choose what is best for me and my future.
