Active Duty

As a recent graduate of combat school and brand new sailor to the fleet, I just wanted to be successful at my first duty station. My husband, active duty and stationed in North Carolina, visited on weekends or whenever he could. We found ourselves surprised when we became pregnant last February for the first time and on birth control.

“I wasn't even living with my husband, had just gotten to the fleet, and had so much to learn.”

I wasn’t even living with my husband, had just gotten to the fleet and had so much to learn, I was not ready—these are all the things that ran through my head. After 12 weeks of indecision, we chose to end the pregnancy, and it was the most heart-wrenching thing I’d ever done. But I had that choice, I had the option. I wasn’t lost to bringing a helpless child into my jumbled life.

Six months later, my husband got orders to VA and we immediately began trying again. We are due to have a baby boy in April. I’m grateful I had that choice because at the end of the day it’s no one’s choice but mine. I draw the line for women to have a voice and control over their own bodies.
